For those who don’t know, ‘The Darkness’ is a series of comics (and game) that tells the story of mafia hitman Jackie, who acquires dark mythical powers. While these powers initially make his job as a hitman easier, he soon decides to quit the mob and put the powers to more noble use.
Marc Silvestri and Matt Hawkins from Top Cow Productions revealed the movie plans at San Diego Comic Con yesterday. The movie will act as a prequel to the games and tell the story of Jackie before he got his dark powers.
“It’s definitely an origin story,” said Silvestri, “We have to introduce people to who Jackie is.”
It sounds like it’s going to be a big project, and the guys at Top Cow are keen to get some big names on board: “It’s not going to be cheap, and we’re going to get A-list people on there. [It's something] that talent can really attach themselves to and put their mark on.”
“The audience has seen The Dark Knight. So now it’s like, how do we turn that up to 11 with The Darkness?”
Details are sketchy at the moment, no actors have yet been associated with the project and the plot is still a bit vague. Nevertheless, we geeks can’t wait to see what these guys will come up with!
The guys at Comic Con also spoke about other elements of the franchise, namely the comics and the games.
They showed the folks at Comic Con a trailer for the upcoming game The Darkness 2. Picking up where the last game left off, the trailer shows Jackie making good use of his guns and his mythical powers. The bad news is that we’ll have to wait a little longer for it than we originally thought, as the release date has been pushed back from October to February 2012. Let’s hope it’s worth the wait.
The comics, which celebrate their 15th anniversary in October, will be undergoing a creative shuffle in the New Year. Writer Phil Hester will leave the comic after the 100th edition which will be published in February, but his replacement is yet to be announced.
