As of right now, there is less than 38 hours left to get your hands on one of the best games of the past year, Portal 2, for a bargainous £9.99 on PC or Mac! Having completed a second run-through of the game only yesterday, it’s a no-brainer. Just a wonderful little game.
It’s available on Steam, the digital distribution site run by Valve, the lovely people behind the Portal series. The news comes off the back of the marvellous, cross-platform (and free!) downloadable content released yesterday.
There’s an all-new Challenge Mode that pits your best performances against every other Portal-ist on the planet according to your speed and economical use of the portal gun. Actual testing!
And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a brand new multi-player experience. Say Valve’s pressbots: “You will continue the story of loyal bots P-Body and Atlas as you puzzle your way through a mysterious new co-op test track and once again match wits with GLaDOS.”
I’m not gonna lie, I’m looking forward to hearing what the Valve team have scripted for the character this time round just as much as having a pop at the new tracks. They’re far and away the sharpest writers in the business, and I can’t help feeling that their attitude to the community – fans first, consumers second – feeds into that exceptional quality.
In a week when Gears of War 3 will be selling DLC for 800 Microsoft Points (~£9) a scant six weeks after the main game’s release, getting quality content free of charge is pushing deeply against the grain. Never mind Valve’s notorious inability to meet their own deadlines, we salute a bold and worthwhile statement.
Update – more awesome Valve news! The developers have teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to produce The Sacrifice and other Steam-Powered Stories, a collection set in the world of Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and Portal! The books are available for pre-order, with a UK release date of November 29th. Cannae wait.
