With Halloween fast approaching, it’s that time of year where the scary films rule the cinema schedules. If you love your thrillers, this is the time to head to your nearest theatre!
This year psychological thrillers seem to be very much on the menu, with Contagion, Paranormal Activity 3 and We Need to Talk About Kevin all making their theatre debuts this week.
Contagion
Starring Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon, Contagion follows the rapid progress of an airborne virus that can kill within days. The spread is so vast and so quick that society quickly disintegrates and we’re left with a post-apocalyptic mess.
Full of big names and a great use of tension, this is a sure fire winner. Although, perhaps it’s one to avoid if you’re a hypochondriac!
Paranormal Activity 3
As you already may be aware, I have a little soft spot for this franchise. The latest offering is directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who have had previous form in the creepy movie genre.
This time they go right back to the beginning, when sisters Kate and Kristi first come into contact with the demon that would eventually take their lives.
Despite the strong whiff of a filmhouse milking a cash cow, the critics seem to like it. Joost and Schulman bring something new and interesting to the series that might just be enough to breathe life into the old dog yet.
Let’s just hope they don’t push this much further though – I’m a huge fan of this series but even I don’t fancy the idea of Paranormal Activity 6. Ick.
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Eva puts her ambitions aside to give birth to Kevin, so their mother and son relationship is difficult right from the very start. However, when he is 15 Kevin does something truly horrific and Eva fights with feelings of guilt and responsibility.
This creepy film is getting thumbs up from nearly everyone. In particular, Tilda Swinton is being applauded for her excellent portrayal of Eva. If you like to get the heebie-jeebies, this is definitely one to go and see.
