Matt Smith Has “Got Another Year of Doctor Who, And Then…”

TV

It has been coming. There have been heavy hints dropped throughout the past two seasons, and in particular in this year’s gripping climactic moments. It’s time to acknowledge a truth that has been staring us in the face. Spoilers:

MATT SMITH HAS BEEN AN ALIEN THIS WHOLE TIME AND HAS NOT BEEN ACTING I MEAN LOOK AT HIS HEAD blah blah no. He is leaving the show at the end of the 2012/13 season though:

Further spoilers: Matt Smith has friends and knows many of your favourite actors by their given names! He is so talented and charming and open about how well-connected he is. Okay, serious times. In August, Smith went for a chat to the Radio Times:

Speaking in an interview in the new issue of Radio Times, he told Gareth McLean, “When I finish [Doctor Who], I’ll be…” before checking himself and continuing, “Well, I don’t know how old I’ll be, but by the end of next year I’ll be 29 so…”

Smooth. So, esteemed members of the jury, having brought the above evidence to your attention, what can we expect from the upcoming (by which I mean around this time next year) season? Certainly the not-massively-cryptic “Fall of the Eleventh” seems pretty straightforward now, even if we are in for some of Who‘s signature misdirection.

But maybe we’re not really surprised by any of this. The eleventh Doctor has cheated death twice already in pretty creatively timey-wimey circumstances, and even if we approach the new season safe in the knowledge that a regeneration will be the show’s clincher, that leaves no less room for Stephen Moffat’s incredible brain to weave its tapestry of dreams. That in mind, let’s have a wistful look back at some of the Doctor’s favourite deaths.

I love it when they talk time paradoxes. Also nice to return to a time when River Song wasn’t a wet blanket.

That music is burned on my think pan. When something exciting happens it’s between that and Guile’s theme. And proof again that Matt Smith does selfless sacrifice exceedingly well. Will he get to do it one last time?

Find out next year.
