Thanksgiving TV Specials

While we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK, there’s no denying how important it is in America. Usually, the week before we get a TV show’s Christmas special, we get the Thanksgiving special to get us in the festive mood.

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, meaning this year’s holiday falls on November 24th. To get you in the mood for the holiday, whether you celebrate it or not, here are our favourite Thanksgiving specials.

The O.C. – The Homecoming.

This episode from The O.C.’s first season sees Ryan’s first Thanksgiving with the Cohen family. Seth and Sandy spend most of the episode trying to ensure that Kirsten goes nowhere near the food for fear that she will ruin it, which she manages to do anyway. Ryan and Marissa also go back to Ryan’s hometown of Chino to visit his brother in prison, which causes a bit of tension and drama. Well, it wouldn’t be Ryan if he didn’t punch somebody. If only Chino prisons had group video chat, then Ryan wouldn’t have had to leave Newport at all.

There’s also the fact the Seth is trying to get friendly with both Summer and Anna at the same time, in the same house…yeah, not the best idea.

Friends – The One With All the Football.

Friends had a lot of Thanksgiving episodes, but my favourite one has to be the one where Monica and Ross compete for the Gellar cup. While it may look like a troll nailed to a piece of wood to the rest of us, it’s enough to leave Ross and Monica out in the snow at the end of the match instead of tucking into their turkey dinner.

The Simpsons – Bart vs. Thanksgiving.

This is one of the earlier episodes of The Simpsons and shows just how evil Bart can be when he wants to be. While Lisa is busy being creative for the holiday, Bart runs away from the family home and ends up in a homeless shelter for his Thanksgiving dinner.

However, in the true family spirit, everyone ends up back together in the end, and all is forgiven.

How I Met Your Mother – Slapsgiving.

Maybe not the most traditional for a Thanksgiving episode, but it follows Marshall threatening Barney with the third bet of their slap bet (a bet which Marshall won which means he can dish out five slaps to Barney at any time he chooses).

The whole night is building up to the slap which Barney may or may not receive, as Lily is battling hard to have the perfect Thanksgiving.
