Romance is heating up this week on the mid-season finale of Pan Am. Captain Dean and Collette play hooky from their flight to London after Dean promises Collette he’ll teach her how to fly a single-engine crop duster out in the countryside. Oops, forgot to tell her that it’s at your parents’ farm, didn’t you Dean?

The pair are met by questions and judgement as Dean’s parents were expecting a blonder, more British flight attendant named Bridgette, to whom Dean was supposedly going to be engaged last they heard. Obviously this makes Collette uncomfortable because she really only skipped out on work to fly a plane and instead she faces the realisation that she is a rebound and a decoy for Dean’s lack of fiancée. Instead of breaking it off, though, Dean convinces her that this could be l-o-v-e and that is why he felt comfortable enough to bring her home to his parents. A steamy barn-and-hay scene follows.

Meanwhile, up in the air over the Atlantic Ocean, the crew is bullied by Dean’s temporary replacement, an old war veteran who talks down to the ladies and belittles first officer Ted. Laura learns to stand up for herself and when the replacement Captain threatens her job, Ted steps in and saves her by telling the Captain she means the world to him. When Laura finds this out from the Captain later, she is touched and her heart starts to flutter, only to find out Ted has reconnected with an old flame in London and this time it could be for real.

Maggie tries to make a difference in the world by convincing a passenger/congressman about the horrors of nuclear weapons. She ends up in bed with him and the next day tries to avert his nuclear weapons speech by setting his notes on fire in the hotel bathroom.

Kate is desperate to cut her ties with the CIA and tries to refuse an assignment. When her CIA boss, Roger, threatens her job at Pan Am, she reluctantly agrees on the condition that it’s her last one. She does as she’s told only to find out they need to her to keep up her ruse in London. While she is distracting her targeted jeweller at the hotel, a fire alarm goes off (thanks, Maggie) causing the entire building to evacuate. She loses sight of the jeweller who rushes back to his shop where Roger is gathering information. Kate follows the jeweller there where she catches him and Roger in a struggle, and when one of them drops his gun, she picks it up and fires it, leaving the series in a mid-season cliff hanger ending. By the looks of the preview for the next episode, airing in January, Kate might be on the run…
