Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is out and we loved it! Don’t worry, I will stop myself from telling you the whole plot, so relax! And read on…
Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law return as our favourite detective Sherlock Holmes and his Dr Watson with Guy Ritchie back in the directors chair. Plus there are some new additions to the cast from Jarren Harris as Professor Moriarty, Noomi Papace as Simzam, a gypsy fortune-teller, and Stephen Fry as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft.
The film follows our heroes on their adventures around Europe in an attempt to foil the evil plans of Professor Moriarty.
Bombs are going off across the continent, sparking tensions between the major powers, and Holmes is trying to find out who is behind it. Dr Watson once again succumbs to the excitement of the adventure and helps him out.
The film stays true to what I love about it: the relationship between Holmes and Watson, the jokes and pranks Holmes pulls, the high action, Holmes’ ridiculous disguises and the insight into his thinking.
But Ritchie improves upon the original. Professor Moriarty is a great addition to the cast as he matches Holmes’ intelligence and there are great moments when the two of them are working out each other’s plans. Also Ritchie has some great moments when he slows down the film so you can see the action in real, quality detail. This can be seen in the epic forest chase scene which shows Ritchie at his best.
But what I love about this film is the beautiful subtle hints he presents to the audience as the film progresses which gives you enough to think about and enough to make you feel stupid when he shows you the answer to the conundrum (the last scene shows this off perfectly, twice)!
Overall it is another classic film from Ritchie with brilliant acting from Downey Jr and Law who stay true to the characters through the film and provide endless amounts of entertainment and satisfaction for all!
