Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas and welcome to the Movie Roundup Festive Special!
As you can probably guess, it is pretty quiet over the weekend on the cinema front, but there are still a couple of juice filmbits to get your teeth into – namely Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Yes, Mission Impossible is back with another instalment. Is it one too many? The critics don’t seem to think so, with the majority of them gushing about Cruise’s performance and hailing it as “The Action Film of the Year”.
You have got to admit, the trailer looks pretty slick. When the IMF is implicated in a terrorist bombing plot, Ethan and his team are forced into Ghost Protocol (no, I have no idea what that means, either) and must go undercover to clear their organisation’s name.
Oh, and Ethan has to climb a really big building. No idea why, but it looks impressive.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Next up we have the US version of a Swedish film that has only been out for two years – based on the bestselling book by Stieg Larsson. Now I feel I have said this a million times before: but filming a remake is such a dangerous thing to do. It is always going to get compared to the original, and if you don’t create something that is miles better, it is going to be forever ridiculed.
Luckily for director David Fincher, this film is miles better than the original. Rooney Mara’s portrayal of Lisbeth Salander is excellent, and Fincher manages to skilfully craft together a disturbing narrative that will stick with you long after you leave the theatre.
