What Movies Are We Watching in 2012?

January 3, 2012

Happy New Year everyone! We at Geek Overture Towers would like to wish you all the best for 2012, and in that spirit of goodwill, the coming year promises a host of awesome movie releases. Let’s hit it.

5. The Amazing Spider-Man (July)

Everyone’s favourite arachnid superhero is back for some more swinging through New York, this time with no Toby Maguire in sight. Instead of making Spider-Man 4, Sony Pictures decided to go back to the drawing board and re-boot the franchise. Stepping into the red and blue spandex is The Social Networks‘ Andrew Garfield. Speaking about how he was inspired by Spider-Man as a kid, Garfield said, “It’s given me so much hope as a skinny little streak of piss, who feels more powerful inside than the looks on the outside.”

4. James Bond: Skyfall (October)

The James Bond movie we feared we might never see is due to hit the big screens this October. After MGM filed for bankruptcy in 2010 many fans were worried that it could be a long, long time before the 23rd Bond movie saw the light of day. However, the studio seems to have done a relatively good job of sorting out their sticky financial predicament and Bond fans are now eagerly awaiting Daniels Craig’s return as the silky-smooth super-spy.

3. The Avengers (April)

It been brewing, bubbling and building since we first saw Samuel L. Jackson don his Nick Fury eye-patch in the hidden scene after the credits in Iron Man. This year Marvel’s mightiest superhero team will light up the screen in spectacular fashion. We’ll see Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye teaming up to save the world from Loki’s nefarious machinations.

2. The Dark Knight Rises (July)

Christopher Nolan is back at the helm for the last of his three Batman movies. Nolan has received universal acclaim for his re-imagining of the caped crusader franchise. Apparently he was unsure about making another Batman movie until he, his brother and David S Goyer had come up with a script he felt would wrap up the trilogy on a fitting note. The new movie will be set 8 years after the events of The Dark Knight and will follow Batman’s efforts to investigate the mysterious Selina Kyle and save Gotham from destruction at the hands of the monstrous Bane.

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December)

Another movie which has been a long time coming if you go back to Peter Jackson originally expressing an interest in making the movie in 1995. After a variety of legal wrangles and a couple of changes to the production staff fans of the Lord of The Rings trilogy are finally going to get what they’ve been hankering for: Peter Jackson back in the director’s chair to make two Hobbit movies. The films will tell the tale of Bilbo Baggins’ first great adventure at the side of Gandalf the Grey.

Honourable mentions go out to Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror; The Bourne Legacy, the first of the Bourne movies not to star Matt Damon; World War Z, Brad Pitt’s new zombie thriller; and a remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell. Though maybe not that last one.
