New Girl S01E02: Kryptonite

TV

This week’s New Girl started with the introduction of a new character, Winston. As I had announced last week, Coach left, only after one episode. Good news is that at least he didn’t get replaced by a different actor playing the same role, thank God!

So Winston is a former basketball player who was living in the flat a while ago before Jess moved in. Winston was playing basketball in Latvia and moves back to Los Angeles to live with the guys again. Jess is excited about meeting Winston, but her flatmates have told her that he’s still sleeping after a long night partying. Jess doesn’t seem to care and goes inside Winston’s room and introduces herself with a long and loud ‘I’m Jesssssss!’ You can get an idea of Winston’s first impression of his new flatmate…

After the introduction of Winston, the rest of the episode focuses on the relationship between Jess and her ex-boyfriend, Spencer. Jess realizes that when she moved to the new flat she didn’t bring most of her stuff with her, but at the same time she doesn’t want to go back to Spencer’s flat.

Jess is forced by her flatmates to go back to Spencer’s flat after she’s playing basketball inside the living room and unintentionally hits the TV with the ball. Apparently Jess still has a TV at her ex-boyfriend’s house but she begs the guys not to make her go and get it.

Jess ends up calling Spencer, who she describes as a guy with ‘beautiful hair’, and meets him in a park. Jess still likes him and she realizes that she’ll never be able to get her stuff back. She decides to make a visit to a pawnshop, where she tries to literally steal a TV but as she’s not able to lift it, she decides to go back home with nothing.

Back at the apartment Jess is so sad about having disappointed her flatmates, Nick and Schmidt try to encourage her to go to Spencer’s flat. The guys tell Jess that Spencer is a douchebag and she’s then involved in one of the highlight moments of the episode, as she starts hitting a cushion imagining it is Spencer’s face. After the rage attack Jess grabs her car keys and takes her flatmates and Cece with her.

When they get to Spencer’s house it looks like Jess won’t be able to get her stuff back, first thing she does is give him a hug. But while Jess is hugging Spencer she sees a plant in a pot almost dead. We get to experience another of Jess’ funny attacks, as she starts shouting ‘I told you to water the plants!’ This has to be the funniest moment of the episode, she grabs the pot and smashes it on the floor and makes her way into the flat. She gets out holding a huge TV along with different kinds of clothes, meanwhile her flatmates observe the scene from the car hoping she doesn’t drop the TV, which she eventually does when she discovers that Spencer is wearing one of her t-shirts, oh Jess!

Overall it is a funny episode, with the typical highlights as in any other comedy show. We also get to know the rest of characters a little more. Schmidt is portrayed as a womanizer and it looks like he’s gonna be taking his shirt off in every single episode, he already did in the first two. Nick on the other hand is somehow closer to Jess, they have both been dumped recently and he stills likes his ex-girlfriend.

In my opinion New Girl is going in the right direction, although there might be a thin line between loving and hating Zooey Deschanel’s character. It would be nice to see more stories not only focused on Jess but on the rest of the cast as well, will we get to see that on next week’s episode?
