Hello movie fans!
It’s time to take a look at what has taken our fancy at the cinema this week. Popcorn at the ready…
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Elizabeth Olsen seems hell-bent on proving that she has just as much star quality as her older sisters, and she does a pretty good job of doing so in this psychological thriller.
Olsen plays Martha Marlene, a woman who slowly descends into a paranoid madness after narrowly escaping a cult and its charismatic leader (played by John Hawkes).
You are left guessing to the very last second, and leave the theatre wondering – can we really believe that everything we experience is real? The critics, including the dudes at Filmoria, love it. It definitely looks like the start of a promising career for the mini Olsen.
Carnage
However, if you fancy something a little lighter, you can give Carnage a try.
Starring established funnyman John C Reilly and other big names such as Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster, Carnage centres around two sets of parents whose kids are falling out on the playground.
What starts as a polite discussion soon descends into madness (hence the film title) and all four parents show their true colours.
Critics are hailing is as a pretty sharp comedy, with all four principle actors giving solid performances. Definitely one to go and see if you fancy a chuckle.
Jack and Jill
Okay, I’ll admit, I have a bit of a weekness for Adam Sandler movies. I’m talking Mr Deeds, Big Daddy, The Waterboy and, of course, the awesome Wedding Singer.
I find him really funny, and he always manages to play his characters with a little bit of heart. Now, I know that he’s not exactly Oscar material, but if I’m just wanting a quiet night in with some popcorn and some easy watching, I know I can rely on Adam to deliver.
But lately, when I see Adam Sandler’s name on a movie poster, I flinch a little. The poor guy has just been going downhill ever since I Pronouce You Chuck and Larry, and I hate to say it, but when I saw the poster for Jack and Jill, I buried my head in my hands. I mean, nothing screams an actor’s desperation more than a middle aged drag costume.
If you think you can stomach the slow motion car crash that is Sandler’s career, check out the trailer below.
or watch along with George C Scott:
