It’s incredible to believe that last year there was a short film festival that attracted a live audience of over 150,000 people on one night!
Most festival organisers of any kind would sell both their kidneys for those numbers, never mind a short film festival.
The festival in question was of course Australia’s Movie Extra Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival and one of Australia’s most iconic cultural events.
The 2012 Tropfest is only a matter of days away so here is all the information you’ll ever need to know, in one place.
Last year was the biggest year that Tropfest Australia has ever known, it was an incredible all-day event of drink, food and good times, the weather was awesome and at night the films began and what a treat they were. If you haven’t seen them yet check out the playlist of last year’s finalists including last year’s winner, Animal Beatbox:
This year is the 20th edition of Tropfest since its humble beginnings as an informal short film screening for cast, crew and friends at the Tropicana Cafe in Sydney’s Darlinghurst.
The 20th anniversary festival will be held over a 3-day weekend at The Domain, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney and other outdoor locations all over Australia and promises to be even bigger and better than last year.
Australian of the Year and AACTA President, Geoffrey Rush, will be one of the stars judging the 20th anniversary competition.
The 15 lucky finalists who will be competing in 2012′s Tropfest competition have already been selected. Finalists include second generation filmmaker Matilda Brown, Damian McLindon, director of the self-help documentary The Secret, and Tropfest’s youngest ever finalist, 16 year old star of the Foxtel hit series Tangled, Eva Lazzaro. Tropfest fans around the world have the opportunity to choose the 16th Finalist that will premiere at the festival on Sunday 19 February. Ten films will be shown on Tropfest’s YouTube channel from Monday 6 February. Visit www.youtube.com/tropfest to have your say.
