New Girl S01E08: Bad in Bed

I’ve noticed that every time I talk about a New Girl episode I usually mention Winston in the first paragraph. Well, I’ve done it again and won’t talk much about him because after last week’s episode it looks like things are going back to normal, with the main focus on Jess, Schmidt and Nick.

Remember Paul? Yeah, that guy Jess started to date a couple of episodes ago. He’s made a comeback this week and it looks like he’s going to stay for a while, or well, maybe not after spending the night with Jess…

So, by now you might have guessed what this episode is about. The main story this week is Jess and Paul’s first time. I have to admit that there were some funny moments, but at the same time there were lots of sex clichés and things we’ve already seen in other TV shows.

New Girl S01E08: Bad in bed via Dance Yrself clean

Jess is ready to go to bed with Paul but the first time with him is not all what she expected. Actually nothing happens and Jess says that she’s nervous because she hasn’t been with anyone after her previous 6-year relationship. Sex and Jess, you can imagine how many awkward moments there were in the episode!

After that night Jess takes Cece with her to a shop to buy some lingerie. After putting a pair of knickers on her head (true fact), she ends up buying some extremely confusing underwear. When she gets home she decides to check Schmidt’s laptop for some videos to get ready for the next night with Paul. After watching them and having a talk with the guys, she believes that her sex life has been quite boring and she’s willing to try new things.

Not going to go into detail about the techniques Jess uses with Paul but it ends up being a complete disaster, with Paul running away from her bedroom. By the end though, they try to make things work and they finally have a nice first time. Quite predictable, I must say!

Schmidt gets quite a lot of screen time with his plot during this episode, and I actually find it funnier than Jess and Paul’s. We knew Schmidt had an office job, but what we didn’t know is that all the other co-workers in his office are women.

Schmidt tries to compete with one of his colleagues for a promotion, so he kind of invites himself to his boss’ baby shower. His colleague tries to make him look like an idiot during the baby shower, but Schmidt decides to use his former frat boy experience and turns the celebration into a massive party. This has been probably one of the best moments in New Girl, Schmidt surrounded by women who first thought he was a jerk and that end up showering him with candy from a giant-sized baby bottle, hilarious!

The highlight of the celebration is when Schmidt decides to push his pregnant boss into the pool, there’s an awkward silence when the woman is floating facing down but she suddenly turns around and continues having the time of her life! We don’t know if Schmidt finally got the promotion but next morning a girl walks out of his room, I’m sure Schmidt was much happier about this.

Nick has a small role this week, he doesn’t want to go to a hairdresser to cut his hair so decides to do it watching a creepy YouTube video. Winston finally convinces him to go to his barber shop and Nick gets a 90s hip hop haircut and seems extremely happy with it, good for him!

This was a quite good episode compared to the one last week, the baby shower party with Schmidt was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while. What about a Schmidt spin-off? I would definitely watch that!
