There is one thing we hadn’t seen yet in New Girl: a girl fight. In this week’s episode we get to see one, well, I don’t really know if I can call that a fight but there’s definitely some tension going on between Jess and Julia.
For those of you wondering who Julia is, she’s Nick’s new girlfriend, although he prefers to call her “the person he’s sleeping with”. Nick changes his mind about this term by the middle of the episode, but let’s just summarize everything that’s been going between the flatmates this week: Nick and Julia are not sure about how to call their relationship, Julia and Jess doesn’t seem to get on well, Winston is desperate to go to bed with someone and Schmidt freaks out about a damp towel.
It looks like the relationship between Nick and Julia is working out, Julia has been spending some nights in the guys’ flat and Jess decides that is time to banter with her. Jess asks Julia for some legal advice regarding a parking ticket she needs to pay but Julia doesn’t seem to like Jess’ cutesy ways, in fact she can’t stand her.
The next day Jess invites Cece and another friend home. The new friend is apparently a lesbian gynaecologist who we’ve never seen before, the character looks really interesting so let’s hope she stays for some more episodes. Jess tells them about Julia and they start bitching about her. Nick walks in, he starts defending Julia and Jess tells him that she asked if he had been sleeping with other girls lately.
I thought the “thing” between Nick and Jess was over, but it looks like I was wrong. Right now I don’t really know whether Julia was jealous or Jess actually likes Nick.
Later on at the bar Nick talks to Julia about the “girls situation”, she says that she’s seeing other people and Nick, of course, replies that he’s doing the same. They’re both, obviously, lying. After the chat Julia goes to the bathroom and Jess goes to check if she’s alright, Julia is quite upset and tells her that she wants to cry alone and that she doesn’t like her.
This was probably one of the few funny moments of the episode. Jess says she wants to cry as well and that they can cry together, but she leaves and goes to cry into the men’s bathroom and find Nick crying there as well! After all these tears, and a trial about a parking fine and a bird, things between Julia and Jess start to work out and Julia even gets invited to a crochet session (who wouldn’t want to be invited to this?).
Julia ends up telling Nick she lied about seeing other guys and that she only wants to date him. Nick looks happy with the idea, of course, and he admits that he hasn’t been dating anyone else either. Let’s see if this lasts…
Winston is starting to become more important in the show’s plots, he’s not getting big roles but at least we get to know more about him every week. This week we discover that he hasn’t had sex in 4 months and that he’s a little desperate, and well, I don’t blame him. He calls a girl he had dated before moving to Latvia (a little recap here, Winston moved to Latvia to play basketball and was living there for 2 years). After trying quite hard, he finally gets another date with her by the end of the episode.
And finally Schmidt, if you’ve been reading the previous reviews you’ll probably notice that he has become my favourite character, so you can only expect good words coming from my mouth in this paragraph. We had seen the fussy side of Schmidt in some of the previous episodes, but the towel situation this week has been the highlight of the show.
Schmidt spends the whole episode complaining about his towel being wet every time he wants to take a shower. Jess suggests that maybe they should get a towel bar instead of hangers, but even after putting the towel on the bar it continues being wet. By the end of the episode the mystery behind the damp towel is revealed, Nick has been using it thinking it was his towel. You can imagine Schmidt’s face when he finds out about this…
