The CW, the US TV network for young and trendy people, is reportedly exploring the rights to Battle Royale with the hopes of developing a television show based on the idea. This move has nothing to do with the success of The Hunger Games, nothing at all so don’t even think that it does.
Battle Royale is a novel written in 1999 by Koushun Takami that takes place in an alternate timeline in Japan. The plot involves school children being placed in an event called The Program by the totalitarian government and being forced to fight to the death.
The novel was adapted into a controversial and successful film in 2000 when apparently some people found the violent murders of children a little tasteless. There have also been manga and theatrical adaptations. However is seems that the television adaptation might be a Battle Royale with cheese.
How the CW might adapt and Americanise the concept should be pretty interesting to witness. Will they have a bunch of pretty 30-somethings running around pretending to be teenagers while killing each other in a PG13 friendly way? How can they write a part for Katie Cassidy? Will Kristen Bell do the voice over? Will this show sit nicely next to Hart of Dixie? If so, can they have a crossover event?
Check out the trailer for the Battle Royale film below and remember it’s not for kids.
