Reviews Round-up: The Expendables 2

Movies

The Expendables are back and they are expendableing more that ever before…or something. I’m not really sure what they do. I think it involves explosions. The stars (of the eighties)  are back and this time are joined by Chuck Norris, Jean Claude Van Damme and ehhhh, Liam Hemsworth. It’s exciting and probably critic proof but that doesn’t mean we don’t care what they think. So what did you think critics?

Movieline

To even describe The Expendables 2 as a movie seems to do both the medium and this strange, smirking effort a disservice. It isn’t a movie — it’s more like the world’s most expensive, elaborate viral video, making a detour to the big screen before being broken up into more easily consumable segments to be consumed on YouTube.

Den Of Geek

It’s bigger, better and bloodier, even nailing the humour this time. From start to finish it’s a joy to behold, especially as the much-needed sense of the ridiculous that permeated West’s Con Air is present throughout.

Filmonic

This second installment proves that even with a mediocre director and a half-decent script, the charisma of these larger-than-life performers can light up the screen and leave us with an entertaining, funny, and thrilling action movie.

HeyUGuys

If you actually analyse this picture from a critical mindset, it’s a quite terrible piece of film making. The acting is appalling at best, and the script is atrocious and elementary. However, despite the illogical and preposterous nature of the picture, the very fact that absolutely everybody involved is completely aware that the film is rubbish works as a real saving grace.

Yin&Yang

The Expendables drew criticism for taking itself too seriously, but thankfully that is no such problem here; everything from the plot to the action is handled in a very tongue-in-cheek and sometimes over-the-top manner, with some scenes punctuated with a reference to an 80’s film guaranteed to please die hard (pun intended) fans. Admittedly, there are times when the dialogue is unintentionally funny – Stallone is the main culprit here – but this is easily overlooked.

The Expendables 2 is released in UK cinemas on 16th August 2012.
