I’ve recently started watching a TV program, you might have heard of it? It’s called Seinfeld. Okay I know I’m late to the party; but in my defence I was 35 days old when the first episode aired and 8 years old when the show sadly came to an end after just under ten years of success. More than a decade later, Seinfeld is still widely regarded as the greatest sitcom to have graced our tellyboxes.

I’ve been catching episodes on Sky Atlantic recently and while the picture quality highlights the show’s age, the jokes are still hilarious and relevant. But what if they hadn’t bid farewell in 1998? Or they returned for a 10th season for the show’s 15th birthday? Now we don’t have to imagine – well sort of.

If you are on Twitter, I recommend you follow the account @SeinfeldToday. Jack Moore and Josh Gondelman are behind the account and regularly tweet modern day plotlines that really fit the Seinfeld humour checklist.

Here are just some of my favourite plotlines from the last couple of weeks:

There have been an awful lot (in both senses of the word) of parodies uploaded to Youtube. But here’s the legendary Jim Carrey playing Jerry.

And here’s Kramer listening to dub-step in his car.

And here’s the episode of Seinfeld when they reunited for Curb Your Enthusiasm.

As a Brit it pains me say it… the US version of Being Human is quite simply superior to the original UK show. That’s not to say that the original isn’t a great show, it is; it just happens to be the case that the American version is a tremendous show.

Last weeks’ season premiere was a whirlwind affair packed with major developments and serious upheaval: there’s a vampire plague that’s killing them all off; Aiden got out of his underground prison only to be used as a one man blood bank; Josh has been cured while Nora hasn’t; and in the biggest twist of all, Sally’s back from Limbo complete with a real live body.

Things were far less dramatic this week as the show took a little time to get its breath back and let the characters settle back into something resembling normality… we at least until the end, which had a real sting in the tail.

Anyway, this week’s major developments were that Henry is still alive. Yay! I’m quite amused that it still amuses me so much that they cast Henry the heroic vampire from Blood Ties (Kyle Schmid) as a vampire. Called Henry. Casting genius. Anyway, he’s still alive and was keeping an uninfected human locked up to feed from, until Aiden let her out. Go good guy Aiden!

We also got to meet rather interesting new character – Liam Mclean, a pure-bred werewolf and father to last seasons’ lupine loonies Connor and Brynn. He’s understandable a bit miffed that his daughter is missing and that someone killed his son, cut of his head and gave it to the Amish vampires.

And what exactly is going on with Sally? Did she suck the life force out of Trent with a kiss or is she inadvertently laying a death curse on anyone from her old life simply by meeting them? While it is nice to see Sally rejoin the land of the living, I’m pretty sure she’s going to have to die… again.

Liam threw a spanner in Josh’s proposal plans when he gate-crashed Nora’s fool moon party and disappeared with her? Has he killed her, taken her hostage or maybe convinced her to go all wild and feral again? Whatever it is that’s happen you can be sure that Josh isn’t going to like it… and surely that it’s going to cause Josh to get himself turned back into a werewolf.

Let’s face it the whole premise of the show is a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost sharing a home. At the moment we’re two supernatural beings short.

Anyway here’s a promo for season 3:

What did you think of the episode? Does Sally have to die? Will Josh need to be turned? Leave a comment and let us know.

The puppet master Gerry Anderson has died at the age of 83

Producer, writer, director and special effects pioneer Gerry Anderson was a man of great vision and imagination. His work inspired generations of children and will be a lasting legacy.

He is perhaps best remembered as creator of Thunderbirds (1965), but he was also involved in a wide body of model and puppet based work including Supercar (1961), Fireball XL5 (1962), Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967) and Joe 90 (1968).

These shows employed Supermarionation techniques where actors would pre-record dialogue and a solenoid inside the head of the puppets would synch their lip movements with the dialogue. Although these shows are enduring and fondly remembered, Anderson was not fond of the puppets himself. He used the technique to gain recognition as a gateway to making live action shows and features.

Through Gerry Anderson, children could believe in heroes working for secret organisations who saved the world from evil geniuses. Just as the opening to Stingray said, when watching a Gerry Anderson show “anything can happen in the next half hour.”

Much of the model work in his shows still stands up today demonstrating the scale and ambition of these projects and there is little doubt he sparked the imaginations of many of today’s directors.

He got this opportunity in 1969 with the creation of UFO. This series was aimed at an older audience, but it failed to make a large enough impact on American audiences to justify a second season. However, much of the work done for a proposed second season became Space 1999 which ran for two seasons from 1975-1977.

In the 1980s, he co-created and terrified a generation with Terrahawks, another future set children’s programme this time employing sophisticated latex hand puppets.

In 1995 came Space Precinct, a big-budget live action Police procedural set in 2040 with a human detective working in Demeter City police force on the planet Altor. Although a hit in Europe, the American Sci Fi channel couldn’t work out the target audience so scheduled it inconsistently leading to low ratings and no second season, a fate similar to that suffered by his earlier live action efforts.

In 2005, Anderson revived Captain Scarlet in a new computer generated, or Hypermarionation, series. The budget was one of the biggest ever for a children’s programme and merchandising deals promising a bright future. However ITV scheduled the show within existing shows and split episodes in two meaning it never really gained the traction it deserved.

More recently there was talk of a revised Thunderbirds but this never came to fruition.

Below, are just a few of the reasons that Gerry Anderson will never be forgotten.

Supercar

The end of the year is almost upon us, as is the end of the world if you’re listening to the Mayans, so before we are all wiped off the face of the Earth we thought it would be interesting to have a look back at the gaming year of 2012. It has been a huge year for gaming with lots of amazing releases and plenty of discussion about future developments. We have rounded up some of the best-selling, highest average review scoring and overall most badass games that this year has given us.

It feels like this year has seen all of the consoles getting some amazing releases which has kept many people quiet in the usual debate about which console rules. A recent survey from Valued Opinions, a company that creates paid surveys, surprisingly showed the the Nintendo Wii was the most popular console amongst respondents. But we are looking at games here so let’s have a look at some of the stand out titles from 2012.

Borderlands 2 - Developer: Gearbox Software Publisher: 2K Games

Borderlands 2 had a great year in 2012. It has sold almost 3 million copies since its release and has managed to get an average review score of 89! For those of you unacquainted with the Borderlands series you take control of a vault hunter. There are a selection to choose from, each with individual skills that you can then develop as the game progresses. The storyline is set five years after the events in the first Borderlands and sees Handsome Jack, the games’ main antagonist, declaring himself Dictator of Pandora and claiming all the credit for finding the vault from the first game. The game then proceeds to take your character on an adventure as you look to rescue the four original vault hunters from Handsome Jack’s clutches, before going on to remove Handsome Jack.

Gameplay is bright, frantic and full of fun. There is little wonder why this game scored so highly – it has a visually stylish feeling that you are playing a part in a comic book. The storyline is kept moving with humorous well scripted dialogue from claptrap and other NPC characters in the game. Below is some gameplay action from Borderlands 2 to give you a feel for the game.

FIFA 13 – Developer: EA Canada Publisher: EA

The FIFA series has been going for some time now and it has come a long way from being able to stand in front of the goalie and head it into the opposing teams goal unchallenged. The game is all about realism and it looks absolutely stunning. The controls are also very intuitive leading to creative passing moves and tricks coming at the flick of a stick. This year it has sold over 8 million copies, scored an average review score of 88 and is available on 12 different platforms! One of the major aspects of FIFA 13 is the online play. You can now create and build up teams to enter into tournaments and take on people from around the world. This gives the game so much life that you will not be getting bored of it in a hurry.

Mass Effect 3 - Developer: BioWare Publisher: EA

This long awaited game which was delayed and had fans climbing the walls was dropped finally dropped in 2012, and it got quite a reception. This was billed as the conclusion to Commander Shepard’s story which had been continued from the previous Mass Effect games. Previous decisions made in the previous titles actually had an impact on Mass Effect 3 and the final outcome of the game. Furthermore as this was the final part of the trilogy the developers were not constrained by the necessity of allowing the story to diverge. Mass Effect 3 managed to sell over 3.5 million copies and averaged an outrageous review rating of 93%

Assassins Creed 3 - Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: Ubisoft

Assassins Creed 3 is, surprisingly, the fifth major instalment of the Assassins Creed series. There have only been three numbered games hence the 3. The third game is set before, during and after the American Revolution from 1753 to 1783. It also has a modern day setting where Desmond Miles must adventure to prevent the 2012 apocalypse. Assassins creed has always allowed a fair amount of freedom when traversing beautifully designed areas. And Assassins Creed 3 continues this trait. Assassins Creed 3 has sold over 7 million copies and averages a review score of 86. Surprisingly there are seven limited editions of the game which is unheard of for any other game released this year.

Pokemon Black/White 2 - Developer: Game Freak Publisher: Nintendo/The Pokemon Company

Gotta catch ‘em all! Black 2 and White 2 are set two years after the events of Black and White, and much of the beginning events take place in new locations on the western side of the Unova region. These new locations also feature several Pokémon that were previously unavailable in Black and White, featuring a total of 300 unique creatures available from the start of the game. Ramping up the total number of catchable Pokémon to 649. Good luck catching them all! Black and White 2 managed to sell over 5 million copies and scored an average review score of 81, this is a franchise that will continue to grow and grow and grow.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 - Developer: Treyarch Publisher: Activision

This was the biggest game of the year, well of all time actually. Black Ops 2 has made over a $1 billion in worldwide sales in just 15 days beating the previous record holder Avatar. This makes it the quickest selling entertainment product of all time, quite a feat for a computer game. The story runs along the lines of the year being 2025 with Raul Mendes looking to take control of the US military unmanned drones to bring down civilisation. The game has many different choices that will have huge effects on the ending of the game. There is also a bit of time travelling thrown in for good measure. The online play adds even more life to this game with many people becoming almost too good.

Diablo 3 - Developer: Blizzard Entertainment Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment

Diablo 3 began development in 2001 and was announced in 2008 before being finally released in 2012. This series has some fanatical fans that Diablo 3 would have to impress while still staying true to the original ideas of the game. Thankfully they pulled it off with the majority of players being overwhelmed by the sheer size and quality of the dungeons. Diablo 3 has sold 1.8 million copies and averaged out a review score of 88. It may be a while till we see a Diablo 4 but we are sure people won’t mind waiting that long.

NBA 2k13 – Developer: Visual Concepts Publisher: 2K Sports

NBA 2k13 is a revelation of a sporting game. Now in its 8th year on Xbox and 7th on Playstation the game is still remarkably fresh with new developments. It may be lacking in Boomshakalaka but for in depth gaming and build characters and teams this gives the player hundreds of options. Again online play will increase the lifespan, and you will probably be beaten by some insane players, remember practice makes perfect.

Get excited; Irrational Games have posted a teaser trailer for the heavily anticipated BioShock Infinite.

Rather than showing us a bunch of ‘not actual game’ footage, they’ve decided to show us the first five glorious minutes of actual game play!

*spoiler alert* This video contains scenes that may spoil the story line (duh, it’s in-play footage), but if you’re like me and can’t resist it, watch the trailer below.

As you’ve probably guessed by now I love what I’ve seen in this trailer. The look and feel of the environment is great with crashing waves and casting shadows in the lighthouse. There’s nothing really significant we’ve learned in terms of the storyline if you’ve been keeping up with developments (i.e. set before previous series and bringing back a woman named Elizabeth) – but we do know how Booker DeWitt reaches the flying city of Columbia.

With recent news from studio head Ken Levine suggesting the ending is ‘nothing you’ve actually experienced in a video game before’, it’s certainly shaping up to already be a GOTY contender – or a massive over-hype. I’m guessing Booker wakes up to find it’s all a dream a la Dallas.

Sure I’m a little disappointed not to be playing it by now (the release date was pushed back from October to March), but if it means developing a game that’s closer to the first BioShock than to its sequel, so be it.

What do you think of the trailer? Tell me in the comments section below.

Many of us will be expecting to be receiving games from Santa next week and we have looked at what games we expect people to be asking for but we wanted to take a look into the future and see what games are coming out in 2013 that people are already beginning to make some noise over.

First up we have a look at a new title from Ubisoft called Watch Dogs. This game looks to be high in detail and an interesting story line. It looks a lot like many of the sandbox games that have gone before but this one has a digital aspect to it that brings it bang up to date with everyone and their smartphone. The video below shows a few of the different digital bits and pieces that you can use to cause some trouble.

Of course it remains to be seen if the rest of the game is decent or if it will be a bit of a one trick pony, there is no denying that it looks amazing and hopefully the depth of gameplay will support its looks.

One of the most anticipated games in a long time is BioShock Infinite. The third game in the BioShock series, it is not a direct sequel or prequel to any of the previous games but it still has a similar styling to the previous games. The game was due to be released in March 2013 however there may be further delays to the release.

This game is bound to be winner, the character development and gameplay will have gamers glued to their screens for quite some time.

A classic game that is getting a modern day reboot is Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series. Always a mix between action and puzzle aspects, this game is looking fairly spectacular. I was never really that into the early Tomb Raider titles but this game looks like it has grown up a bit and would put the gamer in control of their own adventure movie.

For our final game we are looking at The Last of Us. This is another amazing looking game that people are talking about already. The story tells that it has been 20 years since a fungus was released that managed to kill a huge amount of the human population and then re-animate their corpses. Nature has been reclaiming the once proud cities leading to some really stunning gaming environments. The military has created quarantine zones that are keeping people safe from the fungus and Joel, the main character is a black market dealer who promises to look after a lifelong friend’s daughter.

They decide to escape the quarantine zone, for some reason, and are now being chased by the military. The game looks great but there have been concerns raised that it may be a bit to cinematic and scripted which may lead to the gameplay being a bit rigid. We will have to wait and see.

These are some of the titles that we are looking forward to in 2013 and it appears it is going to be another year for massive sandbox games, with the mighty GTAV coming out too. Are there any games that you are waiting for with baited breath? Let us know in the comments sections below. We will leave you with the GTA trailer just to get you in the mood for the fun and games in 2013.

Well the first bunch of reviews are in for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and they’re not as positive as I (or Peter Jackson for that matter) would have hoped. In fact, some critics have been rather scathing.

Image screen grabbed from official trailer at bottom of post

It’s a far cry from the tidal wave of critical acclaim that accompanied Jackson’s first three Tolkien movies. I can’t say I’m terribly surprised though. When I first heard that The Hobbit (one book which was shorter than each of the three LOTR books) was being split into three movies of epic scale, I started to worry it would feel slow and tedious. Then I realised that it was going to be a trilogy of prequels to one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, and the spectre of The Phantom Menace reared its ugly head in my brain. I nearly puked.

Anyway on to the reviews:

Robbie Collin – The Telegraph – 2 stars

It seems that as a big Tolkien fan, Robbie was not a happy chappy:

“This film is so stuffed with extraneous faff and flummery that it often barely feels like Tolkien at all – more a dire, fan-written internet tribute.”

He also was not impressed with the pacing of the movie:

“…half an hour per chapter, or one minute and 20 seconds per page. The work of the sombre Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr, whose grinding tale of apocalyptic poverty The Turin Horse ran to a mere 155 minutes, feels nippy by comparison.”

Geoffrey MacNab – The Independent – 3 stars

While not as aggrieved as Robbie Collin, Geoffrey MacNab didn’t seem entirely convinced. His main gripe seemed to be the story failing to move along quickly enough, and he’s certainly in the camp that feels that making 3 epic movies is taking things too far:

“There is a sense of sledgehammers being used to crack nuts in the first part of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. J.R.R. Tolkein’s short 1937 novel, a prequel to The Lord Of The Rings, has been turned into an enormous Wagnerian epic by Jackson and his collaborators.”

On a more positive note he wrote:

“Thankfully, Jackson’s flair for action sequences and bold and complex production design hasn’t deserted him. Huge, snarling dogs and a chase sequence involving a wizard played by Sylvester McCoy being pulled by a sledge of super-nimble rabbits add some bite to the storytelling.”

Matthew Leyland – Total Film – 5 stars

Leyland was a hell of a lot more positive about the movie. He enjoyed the experience of seeing the movie in the new 48fps format. Leyland also disagreed with the others regarding the pacing:

“In terms of key incidents, AUJ doesn’t burrow too far into Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings-predating novel. Yet it rarely feels like Jackson has had the rolling pin out, overstretching the material.

Nudging three hours, it moves at an even clip – and that’s with the plot delayed by two prologues.”

He even ended up waxing lyrical in his summation:

“Charming, spectacular, technically audacious… in short, everything you expect from a Peter Jackson movie. A feeling of familiarity does take hold in places, but this is an epically entertaining first course.”

I for one will definitely be heading along to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in all its 48fps glory. I might not be happy about the book being split into three parts, but there’s no way I’ll be missing out on seeing such a cinematic spectacle.

Will you be going to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey? Let us know why/why not in the comments box below.

Kevin Smith, the director behind great cult films such as Clerks and Chasing Amy, has announced that his final directorial hockey movie, Hit Somebody, will now be a mini-series and hopes to see it “going into production next year”.

The announcement came via one of Smith’s latest podcasts with lifelong co-star Jason Mewes, Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, when the Clerks director was explaining exactly what was happening with the two-film hockey movie epic since he first announced it around three years ago.

Smith explained that after he had Pirates of the Caribbean producer and fellow hockey fanatic Jerry Bruckheimer read over the script for the first Hit Somebody movie, he realised how hard it would be to get one film based around the popular sport funded, let alone two. It was at this stage that the filmmaker began to “reign it in” and started cutting the script down, much to his dismay.

Smith describes the Hit Somebody story as “massive” and notes that the script “plays like a novel, but if I condensed it down to what it was supposed to be, it was never going to be anything.” It was at this point that actor Jason Mewes suggested the bright idea of turning it into a mini-series.

Retelling a conversation Smith had with Mewes about his frustration with getting the script down to a workable level, Mewes suggested that Kevin “stop hacking it down — why don’t you make it a mini-series?” After a dramatic pause and cheering from the crowd, Smith notes that he has “started restructuring Hit Somebody thusly,” and “it looks like we’ll be going into production next year.”

The filmmaker has been working away at the restructure for the past 6-8 months and has found a home for Hit Somebody on a network, which he currently isn’t revealing. With his good relationship with AMC, who produce his other TV show, Comic Book Men, we wouldn’t be surprised to see an announcement from them soon.
